Crokinole is a trick-taking game with a set of 52 playing pieces divided into two sections, the hors d'oeuvre (25 pieces) and the tiers (27 pieces). The game is played by two to eight players, with the aim to score more points than the other players by capturing the tiers with a croque-en-boite (a crokinole box) and dragging it to the opposite side of the table.[39] The crokinole box is a sturdy small wooden box, usually about the size of a small brick. This is placed on the table in front of every player, and starts with a set of playing pieces. When a player is ready, they throw a playing piece at the crokinole and must then drag it back and forth to get it to the opposite end of the table, before the crokinole is returned to the player's side of the table. When a tier is captured, the crokinole box is removed from the table and a new crokinole box is brought up from the box room on to the table. The box is similar to a travelling chessboard, although there are some differences. The crokinole box is slightly shorter than a standard chessboard, and the tiles are larger than standard chessboard pieces, allowing the crokinole box to hold more playing pieces, and the tiles to be larger. The crokinole box has a lid which can be opened, and the playing pieces can be stored inside during a player's turn. Crokinole was invented by Frenchgame designer S.N. Lagerkvist who wanted to find a game to play with the family at home, other than children's version of chess. He came up with crokinole in 1921, after the family had played several games of a variation of chess.[40]
The traditional form of the game involves the use of dominoes for each player's pieces, and the use of a game board with 22 squares. Some players use preprinted board games, or non-printed paper-backed versions of a standard board. On the printed version, the squares are decorated in an aesthetically pleasing manner. Paper-backed versions allow multiple players to use one board. Crokinole has a number of variants.[41] There are two types of players in the game: the attacker player and the defender player.
19th and 20th Century: Dice were used in games, puzzles and card games. The method of playing a set of dice depended on which game was played. The four-sided die was used for simple games like craps, or lotto, or other dice games. The five-sided die was used for games like chess, checkers, and Mahjong. The six-sided die was used for games like Backgammon, Yahtzee and Settlers of Catan. Seven-sided dice was used for Backgammon and Ludo, and eight-sided dice was used for games like Eights and War.
Rolling a pair of dice together has a tendency to either produce a number that is extremely close to the sum of the numbers rolled (for many games), or to produce a pair of random numbers. For this reason, most games will stipulate that the second number is the product of the two numbers rolled (for example, on a dice pair used for rolling a single die, a pair of 6s will roll a 3, but a pair of 2s will roll a 12). More commonly, games will designate a single number of the pair as the product of the two numbers. 827ec27edc
