Beyond The Wire doesn't have much of a story. It doesn't need one because the gameplay is deep enough to carry its own narrative. And that's what it delivers: an experience that's engrossing and intuitive enough to make the player feel like a virtual cop. In this world, the emotions of each encounter feel raw and immediate. The feel of a gun, the sound of a man's dying body, the taste of blood. You get that through the weapons and the environment. You get it through the naked human desperation in each and every line of dialogue. The way that you can fall into these moments, and then into them again. These are the things that make Beyond The Wire feel special, for better or for worse.
And, like all of the best games, Beyond The Wire really does feel like a game. It has platforming, puzzles, in-game banter between characters, collectibles, and lots of violence. It's a game that would fit well on a PlayStation Classic. It's not an especially pretty game by any means, but it's a good game. In addition to this review, I've also been playing the game, and it's an experience that I'd recommend anyone with a PS4 and a love for games.
Either way, Beyond The Wire isn't the kind of game you play for the long term. Just when you think you know how the game will feel, you get lured into a heavily guarded room, or a flank attack that you were completely unprepared for. If you're lucky, this happens four times. But you're probably more likely to get one of those in-game moments that feel like the end of the world. It's a thrill, but it's also a little scary.
