The facilitation phase is defined as the time it takes for nurses to establish a favorable attitude and behavior toward the new report practice.2,15,17,18-20,27 Overcome resistance to the new practice, defuse stress, and direct energy toward the new practice by engaging in the following nursing leadership and management interventions: ensure effective communication and team building; establish a supportive and motivational work environment; use communication tools to create a positive work climate; and demonstrate leadership in promoting change.
The implementation phase is defined as the time it takes for nurses to fully adopt the new report practice and include the following nursing leadership and management interventions: support and nurture new report practice behaviors; increase responsibility and accountability in the new report process; and ensure that the new report process is linked to patient-centered goals.
The training phase is the time it takes for nurses to become sufficiently competent in the new report process.15,20 The training phase may include the following nursing leadership and management interventions: establish a clinical protocol and perform cognitive and skill practice drills, confirm adequate knowledge in the new report practice, and understand and utilize best practices for implementing the new report practice.8,17,20,21,27
The case is a mature nonprofit organization comprised of eight units that collectively house more than 70 patients. The organization's purpose is to support the practice of the specialties of surgery, orthopedics, and gynecology and provide a patient-centered health care environment for patients. The organization's leadership and management team includes nurses and physicians, and the organizational structure is decentralized, with many nurses and physicians in charge of their own patient areas. The organization recently transitioned to a five-day workweek to reduce the burdens of patient care. From their previous structure, the organization has experienced a 17 percent annual net income growth over the past five years.
In 2017, the organization's leadership team decided to develop a new patient experience, which they referred to as the Center for Whole Patient Care.3 As part of the Center for Whole Patient Care, the organization's leaders believed that nurses and physicians needed a venue to share their experiences, observations, and recommendations to address the needs of patients.
