The film's historical accuracy is as you would expect of a historical film - a little shy on facts and with over-nodding heads.One of the main problems is that the film has no idea how to portray its characters. The rich and powerful are either haughty or hilarious, the heroes are either nice or awful, and the baddies are all universally disreputable. There's a streak of racist hysteria running through the film, and it's hard to see how it will sit well among modern audiences, with its jingoistic overtones and broad thrusts at the British.The one big plus is that the film is extremely funny - but, like The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, it seems to have forgotten that a film can be funny without the underlying message being specifically, directly, and self-consciously funny. There is one bit in which Mountbatten asks for a glass of water, and goes looking for it, only to discover that the kitchen has run out, and has then to dash out into the street in his suit and bowler hat, with a kind of manic desperation, to get a glass of water. If one was a master of mirth, this might be funny, but this is not a proper comedy, and it's a bit too Bollywood for a movie about the British Empire, even with Hugh Bonneville in it.
If there's a moral to the story, it's that no matter how big or powerful, no matter how much wealth you are surrounded by, people are still people, and the British Empire was not a benevolent force on India. The Empire is presented as having been driven by greed and self-interest, and, like The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, there is a hint of anti-imperialism (though it's not exactly the world's best way to go about it) but the film is too busy telling us how much we love the British to delve into any other argument.
